Committees

Committees research, recommend, organize, and report. They do the hands-on work under board oversight, and they are the easiest place to start.

Legislative & government affairs

Track Maine and federal issues affecting pet grooming, animal care, small business, and animal welfare.

What you would do

  • Maintain a watch list of bills, proposed rules, and agency notices relevant to Maine groomers.
  • Prepare neutral bill summaries for the board, including likely impact on members and animals.
  • Build relationships with lawmakers, agency staff, and allied organizations.
  • Coordinate member calls to action that are factual, nonpartisan, and respectful.
Commitment
Most active during the legislative session. Monthly dashboard plus alerts as needed.
A good fit if
Interest in policy, careful and neutral writing, and comfort summarizing complex issues plainly.

Education & professional standards

Develop education that improves safety, professionalism, humane handling, sanitation, and technical skill.

What you would do

  • Plan seminars, webinars, workshops, mentor panels, and continuing education.
  • Draft voluntary best-practice guidelines for board review.
  • Recommend instructor criteria and event learning objectives.
  • Maintain education records and attendance reports.
Commitment
Project-based, busier ahead of events. An annual education calendar anchors the work.
A good fit if
Teaching, mentoring, or event experience, and a commitment to humane, professional grooming.

Membership & outreach

Grow, retain, and support members statewide, with accurate categories and a warm welcome.

What you would do

  • Recruit professional, associate, student, apprentice, and sponsor members.
  • Maintain a welcome packet covering benefits, dues, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Collect member feedback and report common needs to the board.
  • Help create regional connection points across Maine.
Commitment
Steady, light monthly work. A monthly membership update keeps the board informed.
A good fit if
Friendly outreach, organization, and a genuine interest in welcoming new groomers.

Events & sponsorship

Plan events and sponsorship programs that support the mission and stay within budget and brand rules.

What you would do

  • Draft event proposals with date, location, budget, and volunteer needs.
  • Prepare sponsor packages for board approval and track sponsor deliverables.
  • Coordinate venues, registration, signage, vendors, and thank-you follow-up.
  • Deliver receipts and financial records to the Treasurer promptly.
Commitment
Bursts of activity around each event. Quieter between events.
A good fit if
Event planning, organization, and comfort coordinating people and vendors.

Ethics & animal welfare

Support professional conduct, humane handling, safety education, and fair complaint intake.

What you would do

  • Draft and update the Code of Professional Conduct for board approval.
  • Create resources on humane handling, emergency response, sanitation, and client communication.
  • Receive ethics concerns only under a board-approved grievance procedure.
  • Separate fact-gathering from discipline: final decisions belong to the board.
Commitment
Light and steady, with focused effort if a concern is raised.
A good fit if
Discretion, fairness, and a strong commitment to animal welfare and professional standards.

Communications & public relations

Keep public messaging consistent across the website, social media, newsletters, and member updates.

What you would do

  • Publish announcements, event updates, member spotlights, and educational content.
  • Keep messaging on-brand and route sensitive matters to the board before publishing.
  • Maintain a content calendar and a newsletter cadence.
  • Protect logo use and represent sponsors accurately.
Commitment
Recurring, light monthly work. A monthly content calendar keeps it manageable.
A good fit if
Comfort with social media, writing, newsletters, or graphics, and a steady, reliable cadence.

Finance & audit

Support the Treasurer with budgeting, financial review, controls, and risk management.

What you would do

  • Review financial statements and bank reconciliations at least quarterly.
  • Recommend the annual budget, reserves, and financial policies.
  • Conduct an internal review of records annually.
  • Recommend insurance, fraud prevention, and document-retention improvements.
Commitment
Quarterly review cycle, heavier around budget season.
A good fit if
Finance, bookkeeping, or audit comfort, attention to detail, and confidentiality.

Nominations & governance

Keep a healthy leadership pipeline: elections, board onboarding, and bylaws review.

What you would do

  • Recruit qualified candidates for officer, director, and committee roles.
  • Prepare election timelines and candidate questionnaires.
  • Recommend updates to bylaws, conflict policies, and codes of conduct.
  • Provide onboarding materials for new directors.
Commitment
Seasonal, busiest ahead of the annual election and meeting.
A good fit if
Good judgment about people and process, discretion, and an interest in healthy governance.
