Leadership opportunities

Help lead MPPGA.

MPPGA runs on the groomers who show up for it. Whether you can chair a committee, sit on the board, or lend a hand at events, there’s a place for you. No prior board experience needed, just a commitment to our profession and the animals in our care.

How it works

The application process

Applying takes a few minutes. Submitting does not guarantee a placement: roles are filled according to MPPGA bylaws, board policy, and where the association needs help.

  1. 1

    Review the roles

Read the officer, board, and committee descriptions below and find where you would like to help. Not sure? You can apply and let the board suggest a fit.

  2. 2

    Submit your application

Complete the online application. It collects your contact details, interests, experience, availability, and a short note on why you want to help.

  3. 3

    Board and nominations review

The board or nominations committee reviews every application, confirms membership and eligibility, and may reach out with follow-up questions.

  4. 4

    Conversation and references

For officer and chair roles, expect a short conversation and a reference check so we can place you well.

  5. 5

    Appointment or election

Placement becomes final when approved according to MPPGA bylaws and policies. We will confirm next steps and orientation by email.

Leadership roles

How the association is run

We’re currently accepting applications for Treasurer, Secretary, and Director at large. If nothing open fits today, apply anyway and tell us where you’d like to help: the board can keep you in mind for what opens next.

Officers

Officers carry out the day-to-day leadership and the core records and finance work of the association.

Treasurer

Now accepting applications

Protect the financial integrity of MPPGA through accurate books, transparent reporting, and timely filings.

What you would do

  • Keep complete financial records and reconcile the bank accounts each month.
  • Share financial summaries with the board at least quarterly and help prepare the annual budget.
  • Deposit dues, sponsorships, and event revenue promptly, and pay approved expenses within the budget.
  • Coordinate IRS and Maine annual filings with a qualified professional when appropriate.
Commitment
Two-year term. A few hours each month, with more around budget season and tax filing.
A good fit if
Comfort with bookkeeping, accounting software, and spreadsheets, careful recordkeeping, confidentiality, and willingness to work with a CPA or tax preparer.

Secretary / Clerk

Now accepting applications

Keep the legal and governance memory of MPPGA: minutes, notices, member records, resolutions, and official documents.

What you would do

  • Prepare and send meeting notices, agendas, and approved materials.
  • Record accurate minutes of board, membership, and committee meetings.
  • Maintain the bylaws, policies, committee charters, and adopted minutes.
  • Track officer and director terms, appointments, vacancies, and conflict disclosures.
Commitment
Two-year term. A few hours per meeting cycle, concentrated around board meetings.
A good fit if
Clear writing, careful records management, confidentiality, and comfort with basic digital file organization.

Board of directors

Directors set strategy, protect the mission, oversee finances, and represent members across Maine.

Director at large

Now accepting applications

Provide oversight, strategic judgment, and member representation, and help lead a committee or project.

What you would do

  • Attend board meetings, review materials in advance, and vote in the best interests of MPPGA.
  • Join at least one committee or project team.
  • Help recruit members, sponsors, educators, and future board candidates.
  • Disclose conflicts of interest and protect confidential member, personnel, and financial information.
Commitment
Staggered two-year terms recommended. Board meets at least quarterly, plus committee work.
A good fit if
Professional judgment, reliable attendance, respectful conduct, and a statewide mindset. Focus seats are welcome in education, membership, events and sponsorship, or ethics and animal welfare.
